The Challenge: Limited Access & Complex Site Conditions

The Plunket Whangarei playground needed updated shade coverage to provide better sun protection for the children. However, the site posed several obstacles—there was no digger access, and ramps crisscrossed the section, making equipment maneuverability a challenge. This meant that a traditional installation approach wouldn't work, and we had to think creatively.

The Solution: A Sturdy & Cost-Effective A-Frame Shade Sail Design

After carefully assessing the site, we designed a smart, durable shade solution using six steel poles to support an A-frame shade sail system with two overlapping sails. This configuration offered multiple benefits:

• Maximum Coverage: The sails were positioned high enough to clear the existing playground structure while ensuring ample shaded space.
• Optimal Drainage: The A-frame design allowed for proper rainwater runoff, preventing pooling and extending the lifespan of the sails.
• Cost Efficiency: By utilizing a dual-sail system, we provided the necessary coverage while keeping the project within budget.

Overcoming Site Challenges with Smart Work & Innovation

Given the restricted access, we had to get resourceful. Our team utilized ramps and a compact Dingo walk-behind digger, making it possible to install the poles without heavy machinery. We also relied on old-fashioned hard work and a bit of “elbow grease” to get the job done right. To ensure a smooth installation, sections of fencing had to be removed and then rebuilt—a task our skilled team handled seamlessly.
