Creating Flexible Shade Solutions for Kaikohe Christian School

Kaikohe Christian School had a vision to provide shade for their students but, like many schools, were limited by funding constraints. Over the past three years, Shadeland has worked closely with them to bring this project to life, designing a shade sail system that could be installed in stages—allowing the school to add coverage as funds became available.

Smart Planning for Long-Term Savings

The key to making this project work was installing high-quality, engineered posts that could support additional shade sails in the future. This approach meant that instead of starting from scratch each time, the school could build upon the initial installation, reducing costs and ensuring a seamless final result.

The final design featured an eight-triangle, eight-post layout, strategically using posts for multiple sails to maximize coverage while keeping costs down. With two 8m central posts to elevate the sails above the playground area and provide shade.

Breaking the Installation into Stages

1. Stage 1 – Focused on shading the most crucial playground area. We installed two shadesails on four poles, providing immediate relief from the sun.
2. Stage 2 – Added one more pole, allowing for the installation of two additional sails, expanding coverage while minimizing new materials.
3. Stages 3 & 4 – Followed the same approach, reusing two existing poles to further reduce costs while completing the full shade system.

By carefully planning and phasing the installation, Kaikohe Christian School was able to provide much-needed UV protection for students without overextending their budget.
