Built using reclaimed native timber and featuring intricate blacksmith work, it exudes a rustic charm that is further enhanced by its striking stone pillars. The owners sought an outdoor blind solution that would provide protection from the elements while maintaining the seamless aesthetics of their beautifully designed gable entertaining area.

Challenges and Considerations

The unique design of the home presented some installation challenges:

• Maintaining the Aesthetic: The blinds needed to blend naturally with the home’s timber and stonework.
• Working with Stone Pillars: A standard side-channel system wouldn’t work with the rugged stone pillars.
• Ensuring Discreet Integration: When retracted, the blinds had to be virtually invisible.

The Perfect Outdoor Blind Solution

To meet these needs, we installed an Omni crank handle system from Shade Elements, a versatile and reliable option perfect for this setup. To ensure a clean and unobtrusive look, full powder-coated pelmets were used, with black pelmet flashing ensuring that when retracted, the blinds blended seamlessly into the structure.

For maximum protection and durability, we selected Black Extreme 3% Shadeview material, which comes with a 10-year warranty. This high-quality material not only shields the area from wind and rain but also enhances privacy while maintaining airflow and visibility.

Installation and Operation Details

• Two outdoor blinds (2.5m high x 2.5m wide) were installed on either end of the gable.
• Two larger blinds (2.5m high x 3m wide) were placed across the front to fully enclose the space when needed.
• The Omni crank system allows for effortless operation without the need for a side channel, making it perfect for homes with irregular structures like stone pillars.

How the Blinds Work:

• Each blind is operated using a manual crank handle, which allows for smooth and controlled extension and retraction.
• When deployed, the bottom bar of each blind is secured into recessed mounting points in the deck, ensuring a tight and secure fit that withstands wind and weather conditions.
• Once secured, the crank handle is used to apply tension to the blind, creating a taut, stable surface that effectively blocks wind, rain, and sun.
• When not in use, the crank handle is used to retract the blinds, rolling them up into the discreet black pelmet.
• The recessed mounting points can be covered or placed out of the way, ensuring they do not interfere with the aesthetic or function of the deck when the blinds are not in use.
